I arrived in Manchester around 6pm and had nothing in mind.
I was already on the wait list of a comedy show called Beat the Frog. Unfortunately I could not secure a spot. The past couple of days people have been dropping out but I always was too late on the website to book anything.
As I arrived I got another one of these messages so I tried to book again. Unfortunately the booking has actually closed since it is so close to the performance. Luckily for me I was very close to the club itself. So I strolled over and asked if I could perform. After some banter with the cheeky bouncers and talking with the MC I managed to snag a spot!
I was to be on last and so a pseudo headliner I suppose haha. I met a couple of the other comics and we got along famously. So this show is different than the other open mic I have performed since it is a gong show. Pretty much what that means is the crowd decide who stays and who goes. Of course there are various types of gong shows as well. This one in particular, 3 audience members have a green card, if all 3 cards are showing you are off the stage. The objective of the comedians is to last the while 5 minutes.
The audiences were quite happy to use their privileges. Out of the 10 people who performed only 4 got through. Of course I got through. Unfortunately I did not win the clapoff at the end where they decide the final winner. That honour went to a female comic who performed first. To be honest it wasn't my best set. But I was super confident in any case.
Now after the performance my couchsurfer Kieren and I walked towards the bus stop. A large group of college students who had watched the show recognized me and we all sat at the back of the bus together. They really liked my set and were so interested in my story. Anything I said got a laugh out of them. I guess that's the power of social proofing. I also got the number of their friend Beth. And they were seriously trying to pressure her into having sex with me haha.
We parted ways finally and I went back to Kierens place and went to bed in his attic.
Peace from Manchester.
