We arrived in Kyoto after relaxing bus ride. We were so tired we didn't not have time to search up accommodations while we were on the bus.
Once we arrived we found out all the hostels were fully booked. Luckily for us I remembered a conversation I had with someone at one of the hostels we stayed at. In Kyoto University there is a student housing project that allows travelers to stay there for only 200yen a day. We were not expecting much for that price but we were not quite prepared for what we saw.
The housing complex looks like it came out from the movie Jumanji. Hallways were crowded with years of clutter and mess. Dilapidated interiors and exterior were the norm rather than the exception. It looks quite out of place compared to the more modern International Student Housing right next to it. The room we were to sleep in was the student common area but in fact it looked liked a closet storage area for all the random things that couldn't fit in the hallway. Bedsheets, Mangas, half eaten chips, hair gel are just some of the residents of our accommodations for the night. We quickly decided to set up our tent inside the room for fear of bugs and possibly worse critters.
After picking up our rental bikes we decided to explore the area some more and was greeted by some of the strangest inhabitants of the Yoshida Ryo residents - goats and a cock. They were simply grazing outside of the residents building. We didn't know whether to laugh or cry at this point.
We are hanging out at the make shift common room inside the main hallway. And the experience itself overall is just surreal. I am really glad we are staying here tonight despite all the things mentioned. Where else are you going to get this kind of communal living experience anywhere?!? :-)
We slept here. This is after cleaning up a space in the middle to pitch our tent. Prior to this photo there was literally just stuff everywhere! |
