Thailand Bucketlist: Elephant Trek

Item two on on the Thailand bucket list - Elephant trekking.

Dropped by the elephant camps close to Sinbi camp. My elephant driver's name was Tom Hanks (I doubt that was his real name). Tom was a funny man and keen to make a quick buck so I goaded him into allowing me to drive the elephant as opposed to sitting on the cart at the back.

Some of the unexpected things about elephants - they are really hairy, and their skulls are really soft. You wouldn't think they would have a soft head but when I was riding on them my hands felt like they were sinking into putty.

The movement of the elephants up and down hills can be unnerving at first, but pretty soon I got used to the motion and was driving my elephant from place to place. To make them move forward you simply tap them on the back of the ears. When you want to turn, tap on the ear which corresponds with the direction you want to turn in.

Ride on an elephant: check. Next up - scuba diving.

Peace from Phuket.
